Hi, my name is George and this is my attempt at designing a web page or two. I have chosen the years that I spent in the armed forces, the period of time covered will be between 1962 and 1984. The reason for this is basically that I have come across a lot of old photographs which have been lying around in boxes at home, and I thought I would like to share them with any of the older generation who may be surfing the net and have come across this web site.

My story begins way back in the roaring 60's, it was a great time to be young, although employment was very difficult to find. If you were not in the know you had no chance of getting an apprenticeship,
Before leaving school in 1959, I walked the streets looking for an opening in one of the many industries that once were the back bone of the North East, Shipbuilding, Coal mining, Steel Industry and Light Engineering but to no avail.
One day when I had finished my day at school I was confronted by my Mother who informed me that she had found me a job. Great I thought! but I was to
find out that it was working for the local Co-operative store. Well that lasted for about three years after which time I decided to join the Army.
It was a Monday morning in March 1962 when I decided to pay a visit to the local recruiting office in my home town of Sunderland to test the water and see what was on offer.
On arrival at the recruiting office I was interviewed and the channels open to me were explained, all I wanted to do was to join my county regiment which was the Durham Light Infantry. After the interview I was given a few tests to do to see which branch of the army I would be best suited to.
It was finally concluded that the Infantry would be best option open to me, but I would not be able to enlist directly into the Durham Light Infantry, but into, "The Light Division" which was made up of four regiments and these were: 1. The Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry, 2. The kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, 3. The Kings Shropshire Light Infantry and of course The Durham Light Infantry.
After I had completed all the preliminary procedures I was given a date for my medical which was carried out by a civilian doctor, Once I had passed that I was given a date to visit
the recruiting office in South Shields where I was to be sworn in. On completion of the swearing the oath I was given my travel documents and a list of items that I should take with me to my training depot.
On my next page I will tell you a little of what went on at the training depot, which was in the town of Pontefract, Yorkshire. Below are two other sites you may like to visit
